i'm katie marzullo. it is 6:00 a.m. first quick look at the weather as we are in the middle of a big storm. >> lisa: we're talking about thunderstorms moving through parts of the south bay, heavy rain in san jose. here is a look at the east bay. right in between, we're looking at the light rain and heavier rain up in the north bay. let's take a look at live doppler. delta through vallejo, lucas valley road and very heavy rain into the south bay. right now. heart of the system bringing gusty winds from 20-50 miles an hour. with some of this heavy rain, looking at the lightning a, as well. authorities of sonoma, east of napa, american canyon out to vacaville, it's a nasty time of it. a little brit of break in san francisco and down through 280 and 101, you have nothing but light to moderate rain and into the east bay from walnut creek

and heavier cell right here pushing out of richmond. watch out 580, you are looking at heavy rain right there. take a look at south bay, blossom hill road, san jose, almaden expressway, it is really coming down, down around watsonville a break. within the next hour to an hour and a half, this system continues to sink to the south and east. then we'll get into a break. details and foggy sunday is coming up. >> katie: continuing our storm coverage, we want to take you live to in as many. that is where -- he take you live to san mateo. good morning. >> reporter: the rain is not as heavy as it was when i last saw you. its moderate rain right now, but it is steady and like before it

is windy and wind is pushing it in gusts. horizontally, we're here in a fairly empty parking lot. i think people are arriving to work to set up shop but we are pretty alone and cold. the wind gusts that are pushing the rain horizontally are creating standing water across san mateo, parts of san mateo. i would imagine most people won't be standing out in the rain at any time this morning. if you headed out to last minute shotgun or hitting road to go visit family and friends for the holiday, be sure to allow you extra time. be sure to check your abc app, i have my phone in a bag so it doesn't get wet. but i see that more rain is headed our way for the peninsula and headed south.

my photographer and i were bracing ourselves for more wind, more rain and a little more chilly temperatures will bring you the latest in about 30 minutes. for now, we're live in san mateo abc7 nice. >> katie: happening right now, chp says both directions of highway 1 in marin county near olema is blocked. drivers are advised to avoid the area otherwise expect delays. no estimated time for the roadway to reopen. >> the wet weather has been causing different problems all over the bay area. some of those problems may linger for the next fou few days >> joe stopped at the water's edge west of santa rosa and decided to roll the dice. >> came through a couple of hours ago it was pretty light but i thought i could make it through this time. >> unlike these trucks and suvs that made it across, the toyota

got swamped in a foot and a half of water just like the car before him. >> saw a -- found out otherwise. >> michelle and her husband narrowly escaped serious injury when this douglas fir crashed through their home. >> it just crashed. >> i was probably two feet, i was underneath all this rubble. >> also in marin county, floodwaters shut down a portion of highway 1 south of tomales and petaluma road. in pacifica, crabbers are playing it safe. they won't head back out for at least two more days. >> back here, public crews were patching up potholes from the last storm that swept through here. they expect to have a lot of work to do in the coming days.

crews in mendocino are preparing a huge sinkhole that opened up just as truck was driving by on 162 this morning, the semi was torn apart when the gaping hole gave way but the driver was not hurt. caltrans is working to have the road passable some time today. >> you may remember a sinkhole in lafayette earlier this month. it has been repaired. the mayor ghrialtd crews for getting it fixed by yesterday which was ahead of schedule. >> a 56-year-old woman has died from her injuries after a hit-and-run injury. rescuers lifted three people off the hillside off the christmas tree road after they were hit by a car. a foot pedestrian was also hurt. police did find and arrest the 23-year-old driver. california law banning therapy aiming at turning gay minors straight has been blocked

by a federal court of pleams. the law was passed in the state legislature and signed by the governor but the court blocked the law to take effect until it can hear arguments on whether or not it is constitutional. the last weekend before christmas shopping frenzy is under way and retailers are trying something new to help the last minute shoppers -- 24-hour sales. >> all the last minute stuff, i got but i still have a few to go, but i'm close. >> reporter: richard is last minute shopper who has come to mall. they have en ties. for people like humphrey. there are some offering 75% off but full two days of shopping and sales is macy's this is one of more of 800 stores nationwide

that is staying open a full 48 hours. the idea is to make sure that shoppers can find a store open. >> i'm concerned about who they will have coming in at 3:00 in the morning and shop. that is kind of crazy. >> 57 macy's stores will stay open around the clock until christmas eve. bridge point shopping center the toys 'r' us stores will stay open 24 hours until 10:00 p.m. christmas eve. while that may seem excessive to some, he says it works all week. >> it's nice they are open 24 hours and i can get my gifts for my family. >> they say it's too late to shop on line because the gifts won't be delivered by christmas day. daly city police are going to be increasing patrols around this macy's because it will be the

good morning, you are looking at live at san jose where it is pouring. scene is lot of places around

the bay area and will be for the next couple of hours. 52 degrees down in san jose and i was watching a car going through the intersection and kicking up a lot of water. you be careful if you are heading out this morning. >> katie: a san jose parent is worried that children walking to school in her neighborhood will get hurt dodging cars in a busy intersection. problem is in the seven trees neighborhood in san jose where there are five schools near central road and easy street. dan noyes has the story. >> reporter: neighborhood children try to navigate an anxious line of commuters every morning here at corner of center road and easy street in san jose where there is no crosswalk. >> the cars aren't even stopping to let us cross the street. if they do, i feel like i have to run because they are not stopping. >> there isn't much here to separate cars and kid.

we saw how aggressive drivers use the entire stretch of this neighborhood road as a shortcut to get capital expressway or the freeway. how students are forced to walk close to the busy expressway. some take their chances cutting between cars, car after car blocking the way. many jay walk down street to avoid the intersection altogether. >> it's an issue to everyone that is here in this community. >> reporter: there have been no pedestrian accidents, there were 17 car crashes and many near misses. sophia says she and her young children have come close to being hit more than once. >> this is huge problem. i'm just like fed up with it. i have been taking my son to school since kindergarten. since then, i've had to deal with this. >> some parents have given up.

>> i know a parent that lives down street. she drives her child to school when she could just cross the street. >> after we heard from her, we went to city hall. >> we've known that for a while. >> assistant city manager and department transportation manager say they are familiar with the problems in the area. they have installed safety measures here in the past, crossing guard on center road, speed monitors on occasion and stop signs and crosswalks in other parts of easy street but nothing at center and easy. >> things are quiet we know all is well. when we start on to get, it's time to re-look at it as conditions changed. >> after our call, more changes are coming to easy street. >> it pointed out an issue. we are in response to what has come up, going to be installing a krouk e crosswalk there. we will be looking to see if it

warrants a crossing guard there. we will be looking to do spot enforcement to learn correct behaviors. >> that means traffic tickets for speeders. >> we need people accountable for their action and taking pride in the community so doing the right thing is really the primary message. >> after the i-team called, he and city engineers walked the area themselves to see what was happening here. he is making lopez an offer. >> if they would like to do a walk along with us, we're happy to walk to school with them and see the issues firsthand. >> we'll make sure sophia gets the message and time line on the crosswalk is four to six weeks. we're told the city will hold more safety education in those schools to teach kids how to dial with the traffic and cut down some of the risky moves you saw. >> katie: bay area charity has put out a holiday wish list and it's in dire need of christmas hams.

st. anthony's foundation needs to collect 500 hams so it can serve traditional christmas dinner. it made a similar appeal for curbing can i and was able to surpass its -- for turkeys and was able to is your sur pass its goal. >> you still have just a few hours to make sure bay area kids get a toy for christmas. east palo alto police department is asking for last minute donations. department provides more than 1500 toys to families every year. organizers so far have come up short this year. bring donations to east palo alto stil city hall until 9:00 this morning and toys will be handed out an hour later at 10:00. for most on that drive and others, go to abc7news.com and click on see it on tv. hopefully everyone will get what they need over the next few

>> katie: we'll get right to lisa because it's a mess out there. >> lisa: we have a little break in the city but not for long, as we head outside, lake tahoe under winter storm warning and looking at very gusty winds. temperature is 33 degrees at tahoe valley airport and reporting light snow. temperatures are hovering above freeing but looking at one to two feet in the tahoe basin. closer to home, east side of san mateo you see the rainy weather, gusty winds up to 30 miles an hour out of southwest. now in on the west side of san mateo near foster city, light to

moderate here and everybody getting a good dose. two and a half inches and three inches in the north bay in the last 24 hours. some of the rain over the past hour in the north bay is, an a quarter of an inch an hour in some areas. south bay and also parts of the east bay but look at the north bay, you can see the rain line from santa rosa west of petaluma everyone looking at gusty winds from friends in the valley. livermore gusting to 24 miles an hour. 30 miles an hour n over in hayward. 54 mile-an-hour wind gusts at sfo now reporting 30-35 miles an hour with delays over an hour. sonoma, east of highway 101 up through novato, big time rain, a little break here on the peninsula, san francisco down

through daly city but you have more rain offshore. over into the east bay, look at all this rain, from the livermore valley, dublin, heavier up through san leandro and south bay, getting nailed right now with moderate to heavy rain. i along the coast, looking at gusty wind, more enhancement a as the wind and rain goes up over santa cruz mountain. up to three to four inches. 53 in mountain view. 52 in san jose. we're looking at heaviest rain right now through the next two hours or so as it sweeps through the bay area. then scattered thunderstorms in addition to that and another round of heavy rain this time tomorrow. we're looking at a high surf advisory until 4:00 this afternoon. swells 16-19 feet so this impulse pushing through the bay area and cold air behind the system but we do have a little break. take a look at 9:00, 10:00 in the morning, scattered showers

through the rest of the day. this is huge because tomorrow another round of very heavy rain right through the morning and this time through the midday. it doesn't look like until the later afternoon we clear on out. this is through tomorrow. still looking at several inches from the south bay up to 4 inches in the santa cruz mountains. inch and a half to three inches around the central bay. here the winter storm warning we are looking at 2-5 feet above 4,000 feet. this has brought in warmer air so the snow levels have begun to rise around lake county. rain-snow mix but right now, looking at rain changing through showers through the rest of the morning, next two hours or so. still looking at possibility of rain but the heaviest rain comes in again tomorrow. a break christmas eve and more on christmas day.

really treacherous out there. from american canyon through sonoma, highway 1, rohnert park, petaluma, break across into berkeley right now. san francisco is looking at more heavy rain, sloat boulevard, down to moss beach, half moon bay, taking you to east bay with rain everywhere. light to moderate, dublin, 580 and 680. this is san jose, very heavy rain. a report of gusty winds and thunderstorms rolling through this area. so the rain from half an inch to three-quarters of an inch in the next hour from watsonville to the south bay. santa cruz mountains, but we are looking at a little bit of break pushing through the bay area in the north bay. >> katie: continuing our storm watch coverage, we'll head to the peninsula where other reporter has been keeping an eye on the storm all morning. steady rain, at times coming

>> katie: welcome back. it's 6:46. you are looking at live heavenly in tahoe. gusty winds and chains are required on 89, 80 and 50. if you are headed that way, be prepared for all of that. it looks gorgeous if you are looking for a white christmas. >> that is wind gusts up to 100 miles an hour. so the lifts won't be going through the morning hours, if you are there, perfect but you need to delay that travel. it will be treacherous right through the weekend getting to the sierra nevada. we do have heavy rain from emeryville and few breaks around san francisco. back edge of the storm is in santa rosa. still looking at thunderstorms from gilroy and salinas this morning, from north to south, still in the thick of it. this is east bay, emeryville

camera, you can see the rain coming down. upwards of three inches in the past 24 hours from the extreme north bay. we're going to see that in the south bay. santa cruz mountains and rain shadow effect allowing for san jose to see much lesser amounts. right now coming down good in the south bay. live doppler 7-hd. heaviest returns from yountville and sonoma. east of highway 101. the break is in santa rosa and that is where the rain ends. winds have been a story, as well. out of south, up to 25 miles an hour from livermore, 30 mile-an-hour gusts from oakland to the airport. when you have a thunderstorm we've been getting wind gusts up to 50 miles an hour over hour delays at sfo. we're looking for conditions to improve just n the later morning hours. right now in yountville,

american canyon and benicia and berkeley, very heavy rain. here a little lighter blue around the san mateo bridge. it is still raining. you get that break and then you get this again, heavy rain from san ramon valley, 580 and 6080 very rough weather. on the peninsula we've seen gusty winds and thunderstorm just rolled through here. right now, a few breaks around san jose but the heaviest rain pushing south. i assembling the thunderstorms there. from watsonville, santa cruz mountains and the rain continues to pile up in the mountains there. with upper 40s and low 50s right now. this is the first storm, second one comes in this time tomorrow. we'll get behind it in the next couple of hours. we'll see the scattered thunderstorms in the morning hours. on and off rain, but the heaviest is right now. high surf advisory, anywhere 16-19 foot swells. upper-level low, impulse pushing

through the bay area right now. back side of it by 9:00, scattered showers the rest of the afternoon and nice break this evening. then tomorrow, this time tomorrow, once again heavy rain looking at additional two inches. then the front is going to take a little bit more time in pushing through the bay area. we'll see the rain lingering through the afternoon tomorrow. by 7:00, one to two inches tomorrow evening in the south bay. up to four inches in the santa cruz mountains. winter storm warning through monday morning, two to five feet above 4,000 feet. not a good time to go up to the mountains. heaviest rain right across the central bay, it will be ending in the north bay within the next 30 miptsd. scattered showers in the afternoon. more heavy rain tomorrow, a break christmas eve. christmas day, look for rain in the north bay by the afternoon. scattered showers on wednesday and more rain possibly the end

of the week. we are well over hundred percent and we need a break. >> katie: thank you. counted down is on, less than two weeks until we say goodbye to the explore forium. museum will reopen in the spring but at a new home. in this morning's report, dan ashley shows us the staff is racing to preserve the past and prepare for the future. >> reporter: it's too hard to tell these are the final days of this historic place. the exploratorium opened in 1969. a first of its kind museum with interactive exhibits making science fun. a memory wall is up now where staff and visitors are sharing photos and thoughts about four decades of experiences here. one of those visitors who came back is brian matthews. >> it made a big impression on my childhood. i have vivid memories of it.

>> brian is an engineer with autodesk and expert what is known as reality capture. he decided he should be doing it here. >> i called up our friends, like any other experiment they were game. >> he got a few other volunteers and they are working as fast as they can to make a record of the building and exhibits. they are using a couple different technologies including one that starts with photos from a still camera. you take photos from different angles and an amazing software puts them together. >> it can analyze two dimensional pictures, and make a three dimensional model from an ordinary camera. >> they are icing laser scanners. a sophisticated software programmable analyzes the millions of data points and combines them. the image is so detailed it
